Once you have visited the vet and ruled out a medical condition causing your dog’s anxiety, then the next step to stopping dog anxiety behavior is to anticipate the situations that cause your dog stress. Every dog is different in temperament so figuring out what stresses your dog will be part trial and error and part experience.
In my experience dogs will become anxious for these reasons:
* Separation
* Strange people
* Strange places
* Lack of authority
* Mixed messages
* Out of control emotions
* Family changes
Here are questions to ask…”When did your dog’s anxiety behavior start?”
“Does this behavior occur at certain times of the day or night?”
“Does it occur with all people or just some people?”
“Does it happen in certain places?”
“When does your dog show relief or when does the dog behavior stop?”
“What have you tried to do to stop the behavior?”
So fixing a dog anxiety behavior problem is a matter of identifying what the triggers are for your dog and then dealing with it by gradually in order to get your dog used to that situation. For example, if yours is an animal for which separation is difficult, you could try to eliminate dog anxiety behavior by leaving the dog alone for a few minutes at a time. Reward him with a dog treat or his favorite toy.
Gradually increase the time alone until the dog is comfortable.Perhaps your dog has a problem with strangers. Again, introduce a single person. Tell that person How-To behave, calmly and quietly while the dog gets used to having someone else around.
Whether its car travel or other animals, whatever the situation that causes your dog stress; eliminate dog anxiety behaviour by gradually getting him or her used to the situation that is troublesome.
Animal behaviorists are not shy to use homeopathic therapies to reduce a dog’s anxiety. These are easy to use – no pills or shots. Just add a pinch of the herbal tonic to your dog’s morning and evening meals.You may also want to beef up his B supplements too.
Blue vervain is good for depression and skullcap is a well known remedy for calming his nervousness. Arsen alb is a natural remedy used to support the over-sensitive dog that tends to become easily agitated and restless.Dogs who have a tendency towards jealousy would also find this ingredient beneficial.
The thing to remember is that your dog is not being intentionally bad, he’s just scared or nervous and it’s up to you as his doggy-mom or dad to try and take that away. Prevention is the best thing you can do but in unexpected situations, understanding and assurance will go a long way in the short term.
